Avalanche Diodes

At high reverse bias, semiconductor diodes break down by the avalanche effect. This can be used to advantage, for example, in avalanche photodiodes in which avalanche multiplication can improve the signal‐to‐noise ratio. This article reviews the fundamental physics of avalanche multiplication, including its effects on signal‐to‐noise ratio and frequency response.
