38.1: Invited Paper : Manufacturing of Passive Matrix OLED‐Organic Light Emitting Display

Abstract Passive‐matrix organic light emitting display (OLED) has been commercialized since 1999. It is believed that the OLED will become the main stream of the next generation flat panel displays due to its low‐power consumption, high‐brightness, high‐contrast, and potentially low‐cost high‐performance self‐emissive display. The size of the OLED panels can range from 4 mm (microdisplay) to more than 100 inches and can be used in either indoor or outdoor displays, finding applications in various types of displays. However, the commercialization of the OLED to become a promising cost‐effective flat panel display will rely heavily on the development and improvement of the manufacturing process. This paper will present the current key technologies and its barriers to be overcome for the OLED manufacturing and development.
