Observation on the effect of indwelling PICC via great saphenous vein in 64 infants with very low birth weight

Objective:To explore the safety and feasibility of indwelling PICC via great saphenous vein through the comparison of the effect of indwelling catheter via the great saphenous vein with that via basilic vein in infants with very low birth weight. Methods: The data of 64 infants undergoing PICC via great saphenous vein and 62 infants undergoing PICC via basilic vein was retrospectively analyzed to compare the one- time success rate of puncture,one- time success rate of putting the catheter in place of upper( lower) vena cava,the occurrence of pipe blockage,mechanical phlebitis,intravenous extravasation,falling off of catheter,breaking of catheter and catheter- related bloodstream infection. Results: There was statistically significant difference in the comparison of one- time success rate of puncture between the two groups( P 0. 05); the difference in the comparison of one- time success rate of putting the catheter in place between the path via great saphenous vein and via basilic vein was statistically significant( P 0. 05); no statistically significant difference in the comparison of the occurrence of pipe blockage,mechanical phlebitis,intravenous extravasation,falling off of catheter,breaking of catheter and catheter- related bloodstream infection between the two groups( P 0. 05). Conclusion: The safety of indwelling PICC via great saphenous vein is higher than that via basilic vein in very low birth weight infants.
