The effect of a damper on the critical flow velocity of a cantilevered system of two articulated pipes conveying fluid is investigated analytically and experimentally. It is shown that a damper attached to the system at the mid-portion of the span has a stabilizing effect, while the same damper at the tip portion has a destabilizing one. The greatest destabilizing effect takes place when a damper is located at the discharge end. The percentage destabilization due to the introduction of a damper is found to be higher than the percentage stabilization.
