Progress of thermal safety characteristics of high power lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries, as a rechargeable and high energy density power source, were widely applied for their advantages. The batteries' safety and life cycle were significantly affected by the thermal stability issues of lithium-ion power batteries. The exothermic effects including the heat accumulation inside the cell, leading to thermal runaway and even cell burning and explosion at high cycling rate were arose. The thermal stability analysis and the general process of thermal runaway of lithium-ion power batteries were introduced. The thermal models and electrochemical-thermal models were discussed. The ways of approaching the problems of the thermal stability of lithium-ion power battery including thermally stable anode and cathode materials, electrolyte and its additives, the control of the manufacture process and good thermal management system were listed.
