The continuous reduction of resources as well as increasing demand of the efficiency of
machining components, need has been felt to design and fabricate energy efficient materials much lighter in
weight and higher in strength. Composites are the candidate materials available because of their exceptional
light weight along with high strength properties. Apart from their light weight and high strength, they also have
low corrosion resistance, low thermal expansion, high stiffness, high fracture toughness and high energy
absorption capacity. Nowadays, the applications of the composites are growing at a rapid pace in almost every
engineering field ranging from automobile to aerospace. This paper reviews the basics of composite materials
including its classification, manufacturing and applications which will be beneficial for the researches working
in the field of advanced composites.
