Research progress in bone turnover markers

With high sensitivity,strong specificity,and good stability,bone turnover markers can reflect the changes of bone mass much earlier than bone mineral density( BMD) does. The detection of bone turnover markers has great significance of evaluating the equilibrium status of bone formation and bone resorption,differential diagnosis of the metabolic bone diseases,and the evaluation of the effect of anti-osteoporosis treatment. This paper reviews the research progress of bone formation markers,bone resorption markers,and their clinical application. So far,bone turnover markers,such as BALP,P1NP,TRAP,and CTX,have been widely studied and applied in the clinical work. Some novel bone turnover markers,including OPG,LP,and Cat K,need to be further studied,in order to confirm whether they are suitable for the prediction of fracture and the surveillance of the therapeutic effect.
