We would like to clarify our definition of effect modeling and explain why it commonly is less robust and may overestimate treatment effect heterogeneity compared with risk modeling.We define effect modeling as an approach to heterogeneity of treatment effect analysis that stratifies or classifies into subgroups the population on the basis of a model that includes a treatment assignment variable and potential treatment–covariate interaction terms.
