There is a formal similarity between one- and two-dimensional canonical operators. This observation immediately extends two-dimensional Fourier optics to nonorthogonal systems. Every relation in two-dimensional Fourier optics implies another relation for three-dimensional Fourier optics. In particular, the two-dimensional linear scalar transfer function of Nazarathy and Goodman [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A3, 523 ( 1986)] is immediately generalized to three dimensions.
