Well known two approaches to estimating the reliability of optical cables. Ones are based on the statistics of cable damage during testing (or exploitation). Other are based on prediction of the life time of cable by the control of it's parameters and elements. Sometimes trying to combine these approaches. In accordance with the recommendations, the cable life time are evaluated by the probability of failure of optical fiber in the cable. For this we need to know the strength and stress applied to the fiber. To measure the distribution of mechanical stresses on the fiber along the cable length is proposed to use Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR). However, the widespread use of BOTDR limits their high cost. In terms of cable exploitation it is interested to apply for these purposes the usual optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). Potential opportunities have been observed previously in the prior art. In this paper, they are discussed in more detail. The methods of measurement and the results of the comparison of the data of measurement by BOTDR and OTDR are considered in presented paper.
