Photocatalysis has garnered significant attention over the past few decades due to its capability to efficiently harness solar energy for various chemical reactions and applications. To advance the understanding of photocatalysis development, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the historical evolution of photocatalysis and its global distribution from 1912 to 2025. Additionally, the review highlights recent advancements and emerging trends in photocatalysis applications across diverse fields, including water remediation, antibacterial treatments, H 2 production, CO₂ conversion, self-cleaning coatings, and more. Additionally, the progress of the photocatalytic market value and its real product availability in our daily lives have also been discussed in detail. Lastly, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding to researchers, industry practitioners, and policymakers about photocatalysis and photocatalytic technology from the laboratory to market and encourage them to further novel and applied developments for the betterment of life.
