Ansiedad matemática y engagement académico en estudiantes de educación media superior en México

The mathematics learning process is influenced by several variables that influence the optimal development of knowledge and positive attitudes towards mathematics in students; therefore, the study of these variables is of great interest. In this framework, the objective of the present study is to identify the level of mathematics anxiety of high school students in Mexico and their academic engagement in mathematics. A quantitative methodology of exploratory-descriptive scope was followed. Two Likert-type rating scales were used to obtain information on these variables. A total of 120 students from public and private institutions in the state of Puebla in Mexico participated. The results reveal that most of the students have moderate mathematical anxiety; however, anxiety is higher in situations of evaluation of their mathematical knowledge. A high level of academic engagement was found, evidencing a greater desire to make an effort in their studies, high levels of energy and persistence while studying and being proud and motivated with their learning process in mathematics. It is concluded that, although only a high level of mathematical anxiety is evidenced in a few students, it is necessary to deepen in knowing how this level influences their academic performance and engagement in mathematics. Likewise, the influence of the teacher, his strategies and teaching methodologies in promoting a high level of academic engagement in students is highlighted. El proceso de aprendizaje de las matemáticas se ve influenciado por diversas variables que influyen en el desarrollo óptimo de conocimientos y de actitudes positivas hacia las matemáticas en los estudiantes, por lo tanto, es de gran interés el estudio de estas. En este marco, el objetivo del presente estudio es identificar el nivel de ansiedad matemática de los estudiantes de educación media superior en México y su engagement académico en el área de matemáticas. Se sigue una metodología cuantitativa de alcance exploratorio- descriptivo. Se utilizaron dos escalas de valoración tipo Likert para obtener información sobre estas variables. Participaron 120 estudiantes de instituciones públicas y privadas del estado de Puebla en México. Los resultados revelan que, la mayoría de los estudiantes tienen ansiedad matemática moderada, sin embargo, la ansiedad es mayor ante situaciones de evaluación de su conocimiento matemático. Se encontró un nivel de engagement académico alto, evidenciando mayor deseo por esforzarse en sus estudios, altos niveles de energía y persistencia mientras estudian y estar orgullosos y motivados con su proceso de aprendizaje en matemáticas. Se concluye que, aunque solo se evidencia un nivel de ansiedad matemática alto en pocos estudiantes, es necesario profundizar en conocer cómo ese nivel influye en su rendimiento académico y compromiso en matemáticas. Así mismo, se resalta la influencia del docente, sus estrategias y metodologías de enseñanza en la promoción de un nivel de engagement académico alto en los estudiantes.
