Mostly retinal ganglion cells(RGC) undergo programmed cell apoptosis after optic neuropathy. After optic nerve injury, the apoptosis of RGC delays and some RGC survive for a long time, which indicate that apoptosis of RGC not starts immediately at the time of nerve injury and there are some inhibitors playing roles. So it’s significant to study the survival mechanisms of RGC and find new ways for neuroprotection.Recently, after axonal injury, neuroprotective treatment is mainly to prevent apoptosis of RGC,and endogenous protection is seldom referred to in the introduction of neuroprotection. This article mainly reviews the endogenous protective mechanisms of RGC and endogenous factors with neuroprotective effect.
