Immediate implant placement in infected sites: a systematic review

Background: Traditionally implants are placed a minimum of 3 months post- extraction healing; during this time there is alveolar bone resorption which can compromise placement of the implant in a favourable position. This can be avoided with immediate placement implants. Controversy exists surrounding the success of immediate implant placement in sockets; particularly previously infected sockets. Osseointegration between titanium implants and bone is possible despite previously infected sockets.
