Fisheries Management

The integrated process of information gathering, analysis, planning, consultation, decision-making, allocation of resources and formulation and implementation, with enforcement as necessary, of regulations or rules which govern fisheries activities in order to ensure the continued productivity of the resources and the accomplishment of other fisheries objectives. Increased application of area-appropriate fisheries science recommendations and management tools are needed for sustaining fisheries in places where they are lacking. The efforts of the thousands of managers, scientists, fishers and nongovernmental organisation workers have resulted in significantly improved statuses of fisheries in much of the developed world, and increasingly in the developing world. The ecosystem approach to fisheries-Nansen Project has laid important foundations for supporting a sustainable and unified ecosystem approach to fisheries management across Africa. The Institute of Fisheries Management is an international organisation, dedicated to the advancement of sustainable fisheries management.
