摘要
The advent of novel technologies has always demanded greater energy, and it is evident that conventional Li-ion batteries are reaching their limits in safety and energy density. The fields of electric mobility and storage systems are calling for a new generation of electrochemical energy storage systems to outperform current Li-ion batteries. However, replacing a robust and commercialized technology that is now 30 years old is not a simple task, and multiple candidates can be foreseen. (1) Over the past few years, post-lithium-ion battery technologies have begun to emerge within the landscape of electrochemical energy storage systems. These technologies are based on various M-ions (M = Na, Ca, Al, K, Mg, etc.) or involve replacing a liquid electrolyte with a solid one. (2) They rely on the development of suitable electroactive materials and superionic conductors to deliver high energy and power densities while improving battery safety. This Special Issue places emphasis on future battery technologies that rely on elements less critical than Li.
