The Relationship between the Angle of Strabismus and Degree of Binocularity in the Monofixation Syndrome

The manifest angle size in monofixation syndrome (MFS) can range up to 10 p.d because of the unilateral central scotoma present in binocular viewing. In MFS, there is motor fusion with sensory evidence of reduced binocularity. We wanted to assess the relationship between the degree of binocularity and the angle of deviation at near in 75 patients with MFS. For the analysis, patients with binocularity by the Worth 4 Dot test, but no measurable stereoacuity were assigned 5000 seconds of arc. We found that the degree of binocularity as indicated by level of stereopsis was not related to the size of strabismus angle (p>0.05) although patients with normal visual acuity were more likely to have stereopsis level of 800 seconds or better (p<0.05)
