Targeted protein evolution in the gut microbiome by diversity-generating retroelements

DGRs are preferentially transferred to vaginally delivered infants where they actively diversify. Our observations provide a foundation for understanding the roles of stochastic, targeted genome plasticity in shaping host-associated microbial communities.
