ABSTRACT This review explores the diverse landscape of self‐healing polymers, tracing their bioinspired roots and historical evolution. We delve into their classification, mechanisms, and industry impact, examining both extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms, dynamic covalent bonding, and supramolecular chemistry. The paper dissects shape memory effects, nanocomposites, and the role of interfaces in self‐healing polymers, with a special focus on their applications in hydrogels. A pivotal shift towards sustainability is addressed, unveiling the ecological implications of self‐healing polymers and their potential to contribute to a greener future. The review includes a sectoral analysis, scrutinizing industries such as textiles, healthcare, electronics, construction, painting, and surface coatings to reveal the transformative influence of these polymers.
