Metasurfaces are an advanced optical manipulation technology that can control the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves through material selection and structural design. Nowadays, metasurfaces have been extensively researched in various optical applications. Among these, metasurfaces have garnered significant attention in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies due to their compact structure and precise wave control capabilities. This paper will focus on metasurface holography and its applications in AR and VR, elucidating how metasurface holography can be utilized in this field. Consequently, it will summarize and forecast the development prospects of AR and VR technologies based on metasurface holography.
