Constructing nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts of low cost and elevated activities toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of utmost importance to develop potential advanced energy conversion and storage technologies to combat energy crisis anxieties. The science of water-splitting and related phenomena has been explored for decades. However, it is not until relatively recently where nonnoble metal-based electrocatalysts like transition metal chalcogenides are making the mark in the area of electrocatalysis. This chapter aims to introduce readers to the relevance of transition metal chalcogenides in electrocatalysis research, their common synthetic routes, and the effect of the material's manipulation on their electrocatalytic characteristics.
