Phenoxylated dextran-coated single-walled carbon nanotubes (pD-SWNT) as photothermal agents that selectively target inflammatory macrophages over normal cells by a specific antibody interaction with the dextran are presented by S. Haam, W.-J. Kim, and co-workers on page 1147. This solution to the nonspecific SWNT-targeting problem shows promise for therapeutic applications since it allows destroying inflammatory macrophages upon NIR irradiation, while leaving normal cells unaffected.
