Abstract In spite of the role of sulphur (S) as an essential plant nutrient, S‐turnover processes in agro‐ecosystems are only partially known. The present paper highlights the feasibility of the use of stable S‐isotope analysis as a tool to evaluate S‐turnover in terrestrial ecosystems. Examples of the usefulness of this approach in forest ecosystems and current research activities to evaluate S transformation processes in agro‐ecosystems are shown.
