Differences in the color of oxides or pigments in high-lead glazes and in lead-free glazes are due to attack on the pigment by lead oxide in the glaze, differences in pigment and opacifier solubility in the glazes, differences in intrinsic glaze clarity, and differences in gloss. Solubility differences when changing lead oxide content are compensated by changes in the colorant concentration. Opacity differences can be treated likewise in opacified glazes. Differences in gloss are difficult to eliminate.
