摘要
Purpose This study aims to develop an automated value stream mapping (VSM) framework using discrete event simulation (DES) modeling to help build the current state and assess the impact of various future state scenarios digitally. Design/methodology/approach Research approach involved utilizing the capabilities of DES coupled with data collection from a precast elevated metro construction project, followed by implementing the developed framework for process improvement. Findings Integration of simulation modeling with VSM enhances lean implementation by automatically generating current and future state maps. The study revealed that the digitalized VSM had motivated construction professionals towards lean, and the simulation model has increased their willingness to use VSM. Further, the metro project VSM indicated a reduction of three days of non-value-addition per precast cycle and erection. Research limitations/implications The proposed A-VSM framework has contributed to the automation of the current and future state value streams, thus enriching the efforts of lean construction implementation in the context of lean construction 4.0. Further, the case study fostered industry and academia collaboration. Practical implications The study provides a framework for lean and digital integration, and the case study helps uptake simulation for lean implementation in precast construction enterprises. Further, the computer simulation model facilitates construction professionals at the operational level in generating current and future state value streams, quickly testing multiple process improvement scenarios and facilitating decision-making towards time waste reduction. Originality/value Existing studies on DES-VSM integration are constrained by the need to develop separate simulation models for current and future states. This research contributes the A-VSM framework for automating VSM towards digital lean construction implementation. Further, the case study demonstrates VSM implementation for off-site and in situ activities.
