In situ Characterization Techniques of Bimetallics

In situ characterization on bimetallic nanocrystals has attracted much research interest, not only in inorganic chemistry but also for catalysis and other functional materials. The motivation for the development of in situ techniques is originated from the studies of structural evolutions on various chemical transformations such as synthesis, pretreatment or posttreatment, and tests for catalytic properties. This chapter summarizes three important types of in situ characterization means (i.e., electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption fine structure), and highlights the contributions from two different metals to both preparation and evaluation of bimetallic catalysts. It is aimed at providing new information regarding the effective characterization of shape-controlled bimetallic nanostructures.
