From green to yellow or yellowish white: egg‐color changes in relation to oviposition rank in the fir budworm Choristoneura murinana (Hb.) (Lep., Tortricidae)

Abstract Choristoneura murinana (Hb.) females successively deposit green, then yellow‐green and finally yellow or occasionally even yellowish white egg clusters when their egg‐laying activity is not interrupted by premature death. Some individuals lay yellow‐green egg clusters from the outset and the color succession of their eggs is thus limited to the “yellow‐green, yellow” sequence. The production of a reduced number of yellow egg clusters, a total absence of such clusters and a total absence of both yellow and yellow‐green clusters are criteria which make it possible to diagnose that death occurred more and more prematurely compared to the females' reproductive potential. Females reared without food all died before reaching the “yellow egg clusters” stage. When compared to all the egg clusters laid by the budworm during one season in a forest stand, the percentage of yellow clusters can be greater than 20%. Average sterility of the yellow eggs obtained in the laboratory was higher than normal. Résumé Du vert au jaune ou au blanc jaunâtre: variations de la couleur des oeufs en fonction du rang de ponte chez la tordeuse du sapin Choristoneura murinana (Hb.) (Lep., Tortricidae) Les femelles de Choristoneura murinana (Hb.), lorsque leur activité de ponte ne se trouve pas interrompue par une mort prématurée, déposent successivement des oeufs de couleur verte, puis des oeufs vert jaune et enfin des oeufs jaunes, voire même in extremis des oeufs blanc jaunâtre; de rares individus déposent dès le départ des oeufs vert jaune, la succession de couleurs se limitant alors à sa séquence «vert jaune‐jaune». Le dépôt d'un nombre réduit de pontes jaunes, une absence totale de telles pontes et une absence totale de pontes jaunes et de pontes vert jaune sont des critères permettant de diagnostiquer une mort de plus en plus prématurée des femelles par rapport à leurs potentialités reproductrices. Des femelles ont été élevées sans alimentation: toutes sont mortes avant d'avoir atteint le stade «pontes jaunes». Par rapport à l'ensemble des pontes déposées par la tordeuse au cours d'une saison dans un peuplement forestier, le pourcentage de pontes jaunes peut excéder 20%. Le taux de stérilité moyen chez les oeufs jaunes obtenus au laboratoire était plus élevé que la normale. (Lep., Tortricidae) Wenn die Eiablage von Choristoneura murinana nicht durch vorzeitigen Tod beendet wird, legt das Weibchen zunächst grüne, dann gelb‐grüne und schließlich gelbe oder gelegentlich sogar gelblichweiße Eier ab. Einige Weibchen legen von Anfang an gelb‐grüne Eier ab, so daß die Farbabfolge hier auf gelb‐grün und gelb beschränkt ist. Die Ablage einer verringerten Anzahl gelber Eier, das vollständige Fehlen solcher Eier sowie das Fehlen gelber und gelb‐grüner Eier sind Kriterien, die es ermöglichen, eine Diagnose über einen vorzeitigen Tod in bezug auf das Reproduktionspotential der Weibchen zu stellen. Werden die Weibchen nicht gefüttert, so sterben sie alle bevor sie das Stadium erreichen, in dem sie gelbe Eier ablegen. Im Vergleich zur Gesamteiablage kann der Anteil gelber Eier über 20 % betragen. Im Labor zeigte sich bei den gelben Eiern eine höhere durchschnittliche Sterilität.
