The Universality of the Geneva Conventions

Abstract This chapter discusses the universality of the Geneva Conventions. Universality refers specifically to the degree to which particular norms of the Conventions have acquired customary international status; the degree to which the Conventions reflect values and standards that are present in all cultures and civilizations; and the degree to which the norms underlying the Conventions are considered universal and applicable by a range of non-state actors.
