4. Nanoparticles and brain

Brain disorders affect millions of people across the globe. In 2017, World Health Organization has included stroke as a neurological disorder. Treatment of brain disorders has challenges in targeting the blood-brain barrier (BBB) due to its anatomy and physiology. Other brain barriers also pose a challenge to conventional modes of therapy. However, nanoparticles (NPs) with their small size can cross the BBB and prove to be a major promise in targeting the brain disorders. However, different NPs have revealed their diverse toxic effects. Therefore, their use needs more research prior to their application in humans. In this chapter, we discuss (i) how NPs can harm the health of the brain and (ii) different NPs in targeting brain disorders and their toxic effects.
