The Cospas-Sarsat System from the National Search and Rescue Coordination Centre is operated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and involves the activation of one of three types of distress beacons to alert search and rescue authorities via orbiting satellites to a distress situation. From February 2009 the beacon undergoes a change where the owners have to start replacing their 121.5/243 MHz beacons with the 406 MHz beacons.
