Recovery of Male Moths of the Lesser Peachtree Borer1,2in a Peach Orchard

When marked male moths of Synanthedon pictipes (Grote & Robinson) were released near the center and at several distances outside a 60-acre peach orchard in 1966 and 1967, the recovery in 60 traps (baited with virgin females) in the orchard showed that the released moths dispersed throughout the orchard. The percentage recovery of releases in the orchard depended largely on the total number of caged females used in the 60 traps: a total of 120 ♀ recovered 61% of the release in 1966 and a total of 360 ♀ recovered 82% of the release in 1967. However, when moths were released outside the orchard, recovery depended more on the distance of the release site from the orchard: traps ¼ and 4 miles away recovered 47 and 6% of the moths, respectively.
