The undifferentiated respiratory diseases, the febrile catarrhs (acute respiratory disease, exudative nonstreptococcal pharyngitis, primary atypical pneumonias)1 , 2 and the afebrile common colds continue as unsolved omnipresent sources of human distress. About two years ago our group at the National Microbiological Institute and a group at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene embarked on collaborative efforts to study these ailments.
