Direct sulfonation of methane to methanesulfonic acid with chlorosufonic acid in the presence of Ce 4+ as a catalyst was investigated. Oxygen was found to be an important component for the regeneration of the catalyst. The influence of CH 4 to O 2 ratio on yield of reaction was examined, too.
