P2‐423: Effects of pharmacological treatment in patients with Alzheimer's disease

Analyze the results of treatment in an elderly patients group with dementia followed during 3 years in a private geriatric office. This is a longitudinal retrospective study analyzing 57 patients who had diagnosis according to the DSMIV and NINCDS-ADRDA criteria and were supervised along three years. All patients were evaluated by MMSE, Clock Drawing, Verbal Functional and Proverb Interpretation before the treatment and every 6 months, and were also evaluated by KATZ and PFFEFER Scales. Divided in 3 groups related with drug utilized: Rivastigmine 22; Memantine 10; Rivastigmine+Memantine 25. All the patients were in mild or moderate stage of dementia in the beginning of the treatment. They were classified after the treatment in worse (lost ≥3 points/year in MMSE), stabilized (lost less than 3 points/year) and improved (no points lost). Among of the 57 treated patients, 22 received Rivastigmine and 7 were stabilized (32%) and 15 were worse (68%); 10 patients received Memantine and 3 of them were stabilized (30%) and 7 were worse (70%); 25 received Rivastigmine+Memantine and 12 were stabilized (48%) and 13 were worse (52%). These results were obtained after 3 years of treatment. No one improved. Considering the small number of patients followed during the period, there wasn't statistical significance in the results even tough Rivastgmine + Memantine seems to guarantee a longer period of stabilization that is very important for the patients and caregiver's quality of life along the time. This study tries to demonstrate that is possible to have the follow-up of demented old patients in a private clinic and using scientific methods in a place where there are economic problems.
