ABSTRACT Growth in puppies and kittens during the suckling period is briefly reviewed. The nutrients required for this are discussed, as is their provision in bitch and queen milk. The use of milk substitutes in the rearing of orphan puppies and kittens is considered. The composition of a variety of milk substitute diets is determined, and the nutritive value of each product assessed.
