Thinking aloud and reading aloud are two instructional strategies that provide models of proficient language use to listeners. While engaging students and fostering learning and academic language development, both strategies are powerful supports for all students, especially English learners because they facilitate their hearing academic language produced by a capable reader and speaker. This entry outlines the traditions of thinking aloud and reading aloud and then focuses on the use of these two techniques relative to vocabulary development.
