Taxonomic Revision and List of Cyanophyta from the Southeastern States, USA

The purpose of this study is to document the Cyanophyta from the Southeastern States (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) and to revise and update nomenclature to reflect current taxonomic understanding for previously documents species. There are a total of 701 species and infraspecies. The dominate subclass was Oscillatoriophycidae with 321 species, Nostocophycidae had 225, Synechococcophycidae had 152, and Cyanophyceae subclassis incertae sedis and Eubacteria subclass only had 1 species each. The dominate order was Nostocales with 225 (53 Nostocaceae, 39 Scytonemataceae, 35 Aphanizomenonaceae, 21 Calothrichaceae, 18 Rivulariaceae, 16 Tolypothrichaceae, 15 Hapalosiphonaceae, 13 Stigonemataceae, 4 Nostocales familia incertae sedis, 3 Capsosiraceae, 3 Gloeotrichiaceae, and Chlorogloeopsidaceae, Heteroscytonemataceae, Microchaetaceae, Nostochopsidaceae, Symphyonemataceae had 1 each). Oscillatoriales was the second most abundant order with 193 species (116 Oscillatoriaceae, 59 Microcoleaceae, 9 Coleofasciculaceae, 4 Gomontiellaceae, 4 Homoeotrichaceae and 1 Cyanothecaceae). Synechococcales (55 Leptolyngbyaceae, 33 Merismopediaceae, 32 Synechococcales familia incertae sedis, 8 Chamaesiphonaceae, 8 Coelosphaeriaceae, 6 Synechococcaceae, 5 Pseudanabaenaceae, 4 Trichocoleusaceae, and 1 Oculatellaceae) was the third most abundant order with 152 species. Chroococcales was the fourth most abundant order with 106 species (35 Chroococcaceae, 30 Microcystaceae, 25 Aphanothecaceae, 9 Entophysalidaceae, 3 Stichosiphonaceae, 2 Gomphosphaeriaceae, and Cyanobacteriaceae and Cyanothrichaceae only had one species). Spirulinales had 12 species, Pleurocapsales had 8 species (4 Xenococcaceae, 2 Hyellaceae and 1 in each from Dermocarpellaceae and Hydrococcaceae), Cyanophyceae ordo incertae sedis and Eubacteria order had only 1 species each. Plus, Glaucocystales also had 2 species.
