Patients may require additional support in coping with their new life situation following surgery for esophageal cancer. The heavy burden on a patient spouse should also be recognized from the time of hospital discharge. Moreover, patients may benefit from closer follow-up by healthcare providers, including support groups to help cope with insecurity and fear of relapse.
