Assessment and digitization of Mantodea (Insecta) in the Colección Nacional de Insectos (CNIN) at Instituto de Biología (IBUNAM), Mexico City, Mexico

The Colección Nacional de Insectos (National Insect Collection, CNIN) at the Instituto de Biología (IBUNAM) houses the largest insect collection in Mexico. The CNIN contains over five million specimens representing 24 insect orders, including Mantodea. In this study, we conducted an exhaustive revision of the Mantodea collection in the CNIN. A total of 1,584 specimens are catalogued, representing 13 families, 22 subfamilies, 34 genera and 77 species (52 described and 25 undetermined or probably new species). We provide 88 new records for the states of Mexico, most corresponding to species known to occur in the country, and three representing new records for Mexico. We digitized the label data of each specimen, along with photographs of representative taxa, information that is publicly available in the web system for biological collections of the IBUNAM, the IBdata. This study establishes a significant contribution for future research of the mantid fauna in Mexico.
