Being the special parts in Chinese culture, untranslatable rhetorical devices, such as pun, panlidram and so on,are the carriers of a unique part of Chinese culture.Translators, however, when encountered with these rhetorical devices, are often at a loss as how to crack such a nut.Sometimes, they may have to give them up to preserve just the meaning. But,more often than not, certain compensation approaches are adopted to convey the rhetorical fascination of the original to foreign readers.Based on an analysis of some typical untranslatable rhetorical devices in Chinese, this thesis discusses how to handle them by suggesting 4 compensating approaches.
