This chapter discusses thematic analysis and its flexibility and use in psychotherapy research both as a full methodological approach, or a method of analysis in qualitative and mixed methods research. It can be used by students and researchers looking to develop their approach to using thematic analysis or considering best methodological choices for their research projects. Different epistemological positions in qualitative research are also discussed in general, and in relation to their potential application to different research questions. Different types of thematic analysis are discussed, specifically: reflexive thematic analysis, template analysis, and framework analysis. Each approach is illustrated with examples from the author’s research, presenting a step-by-step approach to the analysis. The author also addresses applications and limitations of each approach and highlights the importance of clarity in research design and the choice of approach to thematic analysis suitable for the project.
