Viral Hepatitis and Pregnancy

Because viral hepatitis is the most prevalent liver disease worldwide, it occurs frequently in pregnancy. This can be as acute viral hepatitis during a previously normal gestation, or as pregnancy occurring in a woman with chronic hepatitis. In either situation, special concerns for both mother and child must be considered. In addition, the liver diseases unique to pregnancy can present in the guise of viral hepatitis, providing problems in differential diagnosis.
