Lower Pennsylvanian plants of Illinois; I, A flora from the Pounds Sandstone Member of the Caseyville Formation

A flora consisting of 18 taxa preserved as impressions and two that are preserved as petrifactions occurs in the Pounds Sandstone Member of the Caseyville Formation (Lower Pennsylvanian) in southern Illinois. It is the first Lower Pennsylvanian flora from Illinois to be described in detail and includes the following: Lepidodendron aculeatum, L. rhodeanum, Lepidophloios sp., Lepidostrobus sp., Sigillaria tesselata, S. rugosa, S. brardii, Syringodendron, Calamites cruciatus, C. cisti, C. suckowi, Neuropteris heterophylla, Trigonocarpus parkinsoni, Hexagonocarpus crassus, Holcospermum sp., Cordaicarpon major, Cordaicladus principalis, and Artisia transversa. Floristic and stratigraphic comparisons are made with previously described floras of Pennsylvanian or Upper Carboniferous age from North America and Europe.
