摘要
The use of polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) type fluoropolymers as a binder for dry-processed lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is rapidly gaining traction, driven by the need for more sustainable, cost effective and solvent-free processing methods. PTFE is a fluoropolymer known for its outstanding chemical resistance and thermal stability, both critical properties for a binder material for lithium-ion battery electrodes. PTFE fibrillation – a unique feature of this polymer – plays a crucial role in dry processing, where PTFE fibrils form a fibrous structure to cohesively bind electrode powder constituents. Fibrillation is largely induced by shear and temperature; however, raw material selection, electrode process steps, and inherent binder properties may affect fibril formation and the resulting electrode properties. As a leading global provider of advanced fluoropolymers, The Chemours Company has developed specialized fluoropolymer binders with unique properties tailored for dry-processed electrodes, targeting both anode and cathode applications. Tuning the physical and chemical characteristics of fluoropolymers allows us to improve the reduction stability of anode electrodes and boost the processability and mechanical properties of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode electrodes. This presentation will discuss incorporating advanced fluoropolymer binders to progress dry electrode technology, enabling more reliable, high-performance, and environmentally sustainable industrial LIB electrode production.
