Methods of limiting equilibrium are frequently used to analyze the stability of a soil mass. In such analyses, the shear strength of the material is assumed to be fully developed along the rupture surface at failure. In this chapter the basic principles that govern shear strength and the methods that may be used for its measurement are outlined. Brief descriptions of the properties of some common soils are provided.
