Abstract Abstract The elastic interaction energy ΔE between a lattice dislocation and a grain boundary is calculated for different geometrical configurations and for different anisotropic f.c.c. materials using an integral method. The results point out special configurations for which ΔE = 0 and attribute a particular importance to the anisotropy factor H in agreement with previous work on b.c.c. metals. In this paper, the emphasis is laid on the influence on the image force of two factors: the edge or screw character of the lattice dislocation and the tilt or twist character of the grain boundary. Finally, the image forces, compared with the frictional forces and with the forces between two dislocations, are found not negligible. It turns out that the image force effects must be taken into account when drawing up a balance sheet of the interaction between a lattice dislocation and an interface.
