Abstract The variance of a random variable is the expectation of the squared deviation from the mean. The standard deviation is the square root of the variance and provides a measure of the spread of the distribution. The sample standard deviation may be calculated from a finite sample. The ratio of the standard deviation to the mean, expressed as a percentage, is called the coefficient of variation.
