The adhesive qualities of commonly used consolidants were investigated by measuring static and impact shear strengths of bonds made in deteriorated Douglas-fir wood. Acryloid B72, Butvar B98, and AYAT were used in 15% solutions, each with two different solvents. Glue joints made with consolidant solutions were not as strong as those made with a polyvinyl acetate emulsion adhesive, but adhesive qualities were judged excellent provided a suitable solvent was used. Choice of solvent was found to be the most important factor, with superior performance of polar as compared to nonpolar solvents.
