On Discourse Transfer in Chinese Students' Composition and Its Implications

This paper makes a contrastive analysis of differences of discourse patterns, cohesion coherence, and writing styles between English and Chinese. It also studies the characteristics of Chinese college students English expository essays in terms of discourse patterns, cohesion coherence, and writing styles. The findings show that Chinese rhetoric norms interfere with Chinese students' English writing. Some implications for improving English writing teaching are suggested.
