Display technology benefits users yet meanwhile induces increasing ocular discomforts, and improper brightness is extensively recognized as a primary cause. To figure out optimized screen brightness in different ambient illuminances, we performed human factor experiments in the current study with three different-brightness smartphones in 300lux and 500lux ambient illuminance respectively. We compared ocular accommodation variations and VICO indexes of 30 participants who performed visual tasks with the three smartphones, and found the automatic smartphone brightness in the market was lower than the proper brightness for human eyes, and time-variant brightness with proper brightness level could further decrease ocular discomfort. We implied that smartphone automatic brightness level should match ambient lighting illuminance. In addition, time-variant brightness with proper level is better than constant for visual health.
